3/15/2011 - Updates on Destiny and Denise
Denise had an area of skin that was 3 inches by 8 inches full thickness skin graft taken from her right thigh. The surgeon said everything went well. However, Denise is experiencing a lot of pain. She is on pain meds but asks for prayer for pain control as she heals. She will be in the hospital approximately 5 - 7 days.
Destiny walked out of the burn unit this evening. We are rejoicing for her recovery. We ask for continued prayers as she heals. Joe and Destiny are staying in the "Home Away from Home" at least for a night. Pray for wisdom as important decisions need to be made soon.
3/13/2011 - From Denise
I don't think I have thanked the Continental Fire Department, EMS, and the community & neighbors who worked & prayed so hard on the night of 2-13-11. So, a BIG thank you and BIG HUGS to each and everyone of you! Destiny, Logan and I would not be here if it were not for you. I also want to thank all you prayer warriors who are wearing ...out your knees for us!! It is so hard to believe it has been one month ago today. We have seen, felt and heard your prayers. (= And, last but not least a big thank you to all who have cared for Gram, brought our families' meals, sent cards and words of encouragement, sent checks & gas cards, visited us, helped with my dressing changes, plowed our driveways, and helped us with transportation. (if I missed something... so sorry, thank you too)
Love & Prayers, Denise Nicholson
3/12/2011 - From Julie, Destiny's mom
Destiny had a good day today! Her pain seemed more manageable. She even went 10 hours between getting pain medicine. Usually she gets it every three hours. She spent several hours visiting with Logan, Scott, Grandpa Geckle & I. She also made several laps walking around the burn unit hallway. She was in good spirits and looking forward to her possible discharge on Tuesday. Thank You for your continued prayers!
I miss my children tremendously but I have really enjoyed my husband's company this weekend. My mom is bringing up my children tomorrow. I haven't seen some of them in 2 weeks. This is quite a change from my normal life of being a full time stay at home mommy.
It is my understanding that my Grandma Frost and Aunt Debbie will also be visiting tomorrow. Maybe we can finally get our 5 generation picture. :-)
I could never begin to thank my parents enough for taking care of my other 7 children this past month.
Yes I said month. I can't believe the accident happened a whole month ago on February 13. Because of all your prayers & God's amazing healing power - Destiny has cut the doctor's estimated time in the hospital IN HALF! Praise God!!! Please remember to keep praying for Destiny & Denise. Even though they may be getting out of the hospital soon, it will still take a lot of time for the healing process to be complete.
Thank You!
3/11/2011
Joe and Destiny met with the plastic surgeon this morning. There is no word on whether she will need more surgery. However, there is a good possibility she will be going home on Tuesday. We rejoice with Joe and Destiny for the healing taking place in her body and we are cautiously optimistic. However, please know that nothing is set in stone and there is a lot of time between now and Tuesday. We will know more for sure after the weekend. Please continue praying for healing of Destiny and Denise. Also, remember that Denise is scheduled to have her skin graft surgery on March 15. Pray for preparations that need to be made with the family while she re-enters the hospital. Also pray for healing and wisdom of the doctors. Thank you.
3/9/2011
Joe met with Johns Manville this morning. The meeting went very well. They extended his leave for however long he needed. This is a big relief so Joe can be with Destiny and Logan. A tentative return date for him is April 9.
Joe also reported on Destiny. He got to see the leg that got the skin grafts. He said it looks very good. He also reported some good healing in the other leg and skin graft. There is a possibility of her not needing any more grafts if the leg and wrists continue to heal. Please pray for continued healing and that she will not require any more surgeries.
3/8/2011
We are praising the Lord that Destiny was able to hold Logan, burp him, feed him, and even adjust him in her arms last night. This is a significant step in recovery. Her mom, Julie, says Destiny's smile was priceless. "We just need to get her to be able to change his diaper and everything will be complete", Julie's mom posted on the Support Joe and Destiny page. Please continue to pray for her healing. She is scheduled to have another skin graft surgery on her other thigh and wrists. I am unsure of the dates, at this time. However, Scott, her dad, reports that he was able to see two of her fingers and that the skin was growing back. Please pray that the skin continues to grow. If it continues to grow, the amount of skin grafts she will have to have will be greatly reduced.
Praise the Lord for Scott, Destiny's dad, getting a clear CT scan of his abdomen. Please pray that the pain will go away or that the doctors will find out what is going on to cause him this discomfort.
Denise is also making great progress. She is at home and continuing with her therapy. Her date for skin graft surgery on her left hand has been set for March 15. This surgery will require a stay in the hospital of 5 - 7 days. Please pray for the family as they try to balance her care, details of the family at home, and the upcoming hospital stay.
3/4/2011
Thank you for all the prayers today for Destiny's surgery. The doctor was able to take some of the skin from the front of her thigh and graft it onto the back of her worst thigh. She will need to have another surgery for the other thigh soon. On a good note, the doctor was pleased with Destiny's face. He said she would not have to have any grafting on her face and nose, as previously thought. So, your prayers are working! Please pray for continued healing and pain management. She is in a lot of pain after today's surgery.
Thank you!
3/3/2011
First of all, we would like to wish Aunt Denise a very happy birthday. Please pray for her to be blessed in spite of everything going on and to know how glad we are that she is here for her birthday!
Julie, Destiny's mom, posted an update on Facebook. She says that the doctor for infectious disease saw her today. The doctor does not believe she has an infection in her blood because they drew from two places and only one had an infection. He said if the infection was in the bloodstream, it would show up in both tests. However, they want to rule out infection completely so they have a CT scan scheduled for sometime after her grafting surgery tomorrow. Meanwhile, her C-Section is healing nicely.
Please pray for Destiny tomorrow as she has her skin grafting surgery at 11. Scott has his CT scan for his abdomen at 9:30. Thank you for the generous outpouring of support and prayers. Please keep the prayers coming.
3/1/2011 - Lots of Updates today!
Joe, Logan and Julie traveled to Kalida today. Joe's doctors gave him 3 different medicine for his cough. Hopefully, he will be feeling better soon! Logan gained 6 oz. in 2 weeks and has grown 1/4 of an inch. The doctor was very pleased with his progress.
Destiny has had a very emotional day today. She has an infection in her blood and her bladder. She is very frustrated to be unable to care for Logan. She has been progressing nicely in her therapy, however. She is able to feed herself as well. She has a grafting for her thighs on Friday. She is in constant pain with her thighs and she can't seem to get any comfort in that area.
Denise had a doctor appointment today. She was also able to visit with Destiny, Joe, and Logan while at the hospital. She reports that her doctor appointment went well. There will not be a need to have any skin grafts done for her right hand. She will need grafting on her left hand and will know the date of the surgery soon. This surgery will not be an outpatient surgery so she will have to return to the St. Vincent Burn Unit for 5 to 7 days.
The family continues to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support. They definitely feel God's hand of grace and provision upon them. Please continue to pray as they continue to have a long road ahead.
A reminder that there are immediate needs for food to be delivered to the hospital for the family as well as to the Nicholson house as Denise is home. Please contact Carol Hahn at carolhahncm at sbcglobal.net. Thank you!
2/27/2011 - Clarification and prayer requests
First, I apologize for some misleading information. Denise is scheduled to have an appointment with the surgeon on Tuesday but she will not be having a procedure, nor will she have to stay at the hospital. Sorry for the confusion.
Please continue to pray for the extended family. Now that Denise is at home, Jeff and his family feel torn. They are thankful Denise is at home but their hearts also remain with Joe, Logan, Destiny, and the other family that remain at the hospital. Pray for encouragement to Joe and Julie as they continue to support Destiny and care for Logan. Thank you for all of the support and prayer. The family is grateful.
2/26/2011 - First person update
We had the privilege of going up to the hospital today. We were able to visit with Aunt Denise and Uncle Jeff before she was released. Then, we were able to go over to the "Home Away From Home" room and spend time with Scott, Julie, and Logan. I (Rebecca) had the honor to feed, change, and burp little Logan. What a precious gift from the Lord! Then, we were able to go over to the hospital and spend about an hour with Joe and Destiny. We know this is not a typical experience for people visiting the hospital so we are exceedingly grateful, since we live so far away.
While there, we were able to get some updates and prayer requests to post.
Praises:
- Logan is such a good baby! He only cries when he needs changed or needs to eat. He is a blessing to his grandparents and such an encouragement for Joe and Destiny. The nurses say they wish Logan can be up with Destiny all of the time because she is so peaceful and upbeat when he is around. He is a joy for Julie to care for while Joe and Destiny focus on Destiny recovering.
- Denise was able to go home today. This is a great step in the right direction.
- Destiny was having a great evening. She was lucid and able to recount her recollections of what went on from her perspective beginning from the explosion, all the way to the C-section.
Prayer requests:
- Pain. Both ladies still have excruciating pain. Denise is most concerned about her left hand, especially her pinkie. Her mobility is limited with her left hand and when she does move it for her therapies, it is very, very painful. Destiny is most concerned with her thighs. They are considerably painful and make it difficult to walk, sit, move, or bathe. The ladies are on a lot of pain medications but still feel a lot of pain.
- Emotional health. Destiny has a lot of emotions going on with her pain, being a new mom, and trying to recover from the traumatic experience she went through. Please pray for her to feel uplifted.
- Physical Health. Joe is still coughing a great deal. Please pray for strength for him and healing to his lungs. Also, Destiny needs to make sure she is getting enough calories. When she is in the greatest pain, it is very difficult for her to do anything, let alone get adequate nutrition. Scott is still struggling with pain in his abdomen.
- Extended family. It is difficult for the families to try to continue functioning in their responsibities while their hearts are with Joe, Destiny, Logan, and Denise. Jeff and Denise's boys are trying to go to school (one in high school and two in college) far away from the hospital. Jeff and Scott are back at work during the week. Scott is caring for his 7 other children at home and is spending more time away from his wife than ever before in their marriage. Destiny's 7 siblings are without their mother during the week, as Julie is caring for Logan and helping Destiny in her recovery process.
- Surgery. Both women will most likely require surgery. However, the doctors are waiting to see if the skin will begin to grow back on its own. Denise will be back in the hospital on Tuesday and will have to stay due to the procedure they will do with her. Please pray for wisdom with the doctors and for the skin to grow back, as this is the best case scenario.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their support and prayers. They mentioned that some people don't have any visitors at all. Joe and Destiny, Jeff and Denise have felt so much peace and support from everyone.
2/25/2011 - Update from Jeff
Denise just saw the doctor. It's probable that she will go home early next week. Surgery will be in the near future. She has been very compliant in her occupational therapy and they are confident she will be able to do those exercises at home. She will have to continue pain control medicine and twice a day wrappings. This is great news!
Please continue to pray for the extended family as they support Denise and Destiny in the hospital. Joe is still coughing pretty badly, and they are concerned he may have to return to the doctor. Scott, Destiny's dad, has been experiencing severe abdominal pain. He is struggling to get a doctor to look at it. Please pray for these men as they try to support their families in the midst of pain and sickness. And pray that Scott is able to get the medical treatment he needs.
2/24/2011 - Please Pray
At 9:50 pm EST, Denise and Destiny requested prayer for pain. They are both getting their soak/bath time where they have to remove their dry skin.
On a brighter note, Denise was extremely blessed by the 27 cards she had delivered today. Thank you and keep praying!
2/23/2011
Praises:
- Aunt Donna, from Texas, was able to meet baby Logan. She was very happy to see her sister, as well. Denise and Donna are very close so we know that it must be encouraging to have Donna in town.
- Grandpa Jeff was able to feed Logan tonight. He reports Logan spit up on him twice! Nice way to "baptize" grandpa, huh?
Prayer requests:
- Denise and Destiny were in quite a bit of pain today, especially in their hands.
- Destiny seems to float in and out of fevers.
- Destiny seems to struggle to eat enough calories. She is physically able to consume them but it takes extra effort and, sometimes, she is not able to make that effort.
- Both Dads (Joe's and Destiny's) are back to work. Pray for their strength, concentration, and endurance to keep up with what they need to do. This is particularly difficult for Scott as he has not been apart from his wife this long in their entire marriage. He is also shouldering the responsibility to care for Destiny's 7 brothers and sisters as Julie remains at the hospital with Destiny.
Want to help? Please don't forget that meals are needed for the family that remains at the hospital. Please click here or contact Carol Hahn (carolhahncm at sbcglobal.net).
2/23/2011 - New Donation Opportunities
There will be a donation collection following Mass on February 27, 2011 at St. John the Baptist in Continental, Ohio.
A benefit breakfast fundraiser will be held at Dupont Church of the Brethren in Dupont, Ohio on Saturday, April 9 from 7:30 am until 1:00 pm. This benefit is to provide for Joe and Destiny Nicholson's expenses after a gas pipeline explosion put Destiny in the burn unit in the hospital, and made their house unfit for living.
2/22/2011 - Update on Denise from Jeff
Update on Denise:
Denise's facial burns are healing well. Swelling has gone down substantially. Her facial burns were on her chin and right side of face and her left forehead. At first there was concern that her knees would require some skin grafting but at this point they appear to be healing well. Her right hand has a small area that will require surgery, most likely next week. She sustained the worst burns on her left hand, some 3rd and it appears possibly some 4th degree burns. Most of her left hand, including her fingers, will require skin grafts. She has exposed nerve endings which are extremely painful.
The doctors are visiting daily. She is being seen by plastic surgeons and a trauma doctor, who asses her burns daily. Only time will tell what areas will regenerate skin. Occupational therapy is especially painful. She has to bend her fingers to keep flexibility in the joints and to keep the new skin stretched.
Denise walks the halls frequently. Denise and Destiny frequently pass each other in the hallway or at least stop at each other's rooms on their walks. Baby Logan visits his Grandma Nicholson (Denise) too. He is such a precious gift and he lifts up and motivates both of these ladies.
I don't have a good estimate on how long Denise will be hospitalized, but I do know that rehabilitation will be long, beyond her hospital stay. I am able to work in Waterville so I'm staying in the "Home Away from Home" with Joe. Today was my first day back to work. It was a very difficult day as my mind was on Denise, Destiny & Logan.
We have a long way to go but we have made it through the first week thanks to God and to the prayers of all of you. We don't have adequate words to thank all of you for your kind words, thoughts, prayers and gifts.
A special thank you to those who are helping to care for Denise's grandmother ("Gram") in Denise's absence.
God bless all of you!
2/22/2011 - Update from Julie, Destiny's mom, Jeff and Joe
Destiny's spirits are high today. She ate all of her breakfast and drank some protien shakes this morning. She walked around the burn unit with her mom. She even got on the exercise bike. Joe is feeling stronger, as he finally has the medications he needs. Pray for his spirits to remain high and for the strength to continue supporting Destiny and Logan. It is physically and emotionally exhausting to raise a newborn, let alone support your wife in the hospital.
Please continue to pray for the extended family as they have to go back to school and work. Denise and Jeff have 2 sons out of state in college and another still in high school. It is very difficult for them with their mom still in the hospital. Pray for them, along with Jeff, as they are trying to balance their responsibilities with their concern for their family in the hospital.
2/21/2011 - Update from Jeff, Joe's dad and Denise's husband
Jeff and Joe are thankful to Johns Manville, Joe's work. They are really working with him so he can be at the hospital for his family. They have granted Joe more time off of work. Please pray for Joe's health. He is really struggling with his asthma. Jeff was looking for an urgent care to get Joe seen by a doctor without having to be gone for too long from the hospital.
Please continue to pray for pain management, for both Denise and Destiny. They have daily washings that are extremely painful and take a lot of energy. They also have daily physical therapy to help with their wounds. These are also very painful.
2/20/2011 - Update from Scott Prowant, Destiny's dad
Hi, friends, I have been with Destiny from 2pm till now(7:45pm). I has been a great time. She took me on two tours of the burn ward. On our first tour we were about 100 feet from the locked entrance doors when Joe, Julie, and Logan came in. She went from a slow duck waddle to a faster paced walk to meet them! What a little motivation (aka Logan)can do! She took Joe, Julie, Logan and me on the second tour. She first went to Denise's room, then to the ward doors. There she waved to her fan club of 12+ people. Then stopped at the kitchen to get ice water. Next she took us to the room that they give her baths in. She explained how they wash her up and where different things are located in the room. Now I am setting beside her as she is getting a nice nap with Logan nicely tucked in her bandaged arms. Logan is sleeping as well. Today is a day the Lord has made!
2/19/2011
Destiny and Denise both request prayer for their pain. Their treatments are extremely painful. Scott, Destiny's dad, reports that Destiny had a very tough day emotionally. Also, Joe is starting to get a cold. He is having a really hard time with his asthma. They are hoping he will be able to get to the doctor soon. He was without his medications all week because they were in the house.
2/18/2011 - More Good News!
Jeff Nicholson announced that baby Logan has been discharged from the hospital. Grandma (Denise)Nicholson is holding him for the first time. Logan will stay with his dad, Joe Nicholson, in the "Home Away from Home" rooms. This will certainly be a big encouragement to Destiny as she is using Logan as her motivation to keep working hard during her very painful therapies. Thank you for your prayers and please continue praying.
2/18/2011 - Good News!
God does work mightily! There has been a reveral in the decision about Logan. He WILL be permitted to stay with Joe in the "Home Away from Home" rooms. Thanks for praying!
2/18/2011 - Destiny
From Julie, Destiny's mom: Destiny's white blood cell count is going back up. She apparently was having an allergic reaction to some of the creams they were applying to her body. She is in good spirits today and even ate bacon for breakfast! Thank you for all of your continuous prayers.
2/18/2011 - Thank you!
Jeff and Denise wish to thank everyone for their generous donations to meet Denise's needs. She now has everything she needs at the hospital. With deepest gratitude for what has already been given, they ask everyone to please focus their attention, prayers, and donations toward Destiny and Joe. Thank you!
2/18/2011 - Prayer Request
Jeff, Joe's dad and Denise's husband, just called to inform me that Logan will not be allowed to stay at the "Home Away from Home" with Joe. Jeff is confident there will be lots of volunteers so that the situation will have a great resolution. However, he asks for prayer as the details are worked out. Please pray for a smooth transition and a result that Joe and Destiny will feel comfortable with so they can focus on getting Destiny better.
2/17/2011 - Monetary Donation Information
Since the page is getting pretty long, I thought it would be a good idea to post the address for checks to be sent again, if you are not comfortable donating online. Also, a reminder that you can go to any Huntington Bank in the Toledo/Defiance area and donate.
The address is:
Attn: Jeff or Joe Nicholson
23615 Road I-18
Continental, OH 45831
Of course, if you prefer to donate online, you can go to the donate tab and use your credit card to donate securely through PayPal. 100% of this money is being directly deposited into Joe and Destiny's bank acccount.
Thank you to everyone for your prayers and generosity.
2/17/2011 - 13ABC News Link
Channel 13 in Toledo came out and interviewed Joe at the hospital. Here is the link to the video.

2/17/2011 - Watch Channel 13
Channel 13/ABC in Toledo is interviewing Joe right now. Make sure you watch the news tonight at 11!
2/17/2011 - Urgent Prayer Request
Destiny's white blood cell count has dropped dangerously low. This a very serious complication. Her visitation has been limited to immediate family only. Please pray.
2/17/2011 - The Toledo Blade
Special thanks to The Toledo Blade for printing an article about Destiny, Denise, and Logan. You can access the article here.
2/16/2011 - Positive Steps
There are a few things to celebrate today. First, Destiny was able to walk all the way down the hallway by herself. The entire time, she urged herself on by shouting, "I can do it! I can do it!" If there is one thing that is certain in all this, Destiny is one motivated mama! Joe also reports that she is making progress everyday with her hands. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers, though, as every move she makes causes her extreme exhaustion and pain. Her hands are especially painful and will most likely require skin grafts.
Second, an x-ray of Logan's lungs showed they were all clear! Praise the Lord for this development!
Please pray for Denise as the doctor found a small infection. She had to have an IV with antibiotics today. She is making great progress with her hands as well but it is a painful and slow process.
Many things are being donated. We are trying to get a list together of things that have been donated so there won't be too much for Joe and Destiny to go through when the time comes. Also, there are some prayer requests and needs that are not able to be shared in such a public forum. Please keep these in mind as you pray. The family is extremely grateful for the overwhelming support they feel. Thank you, one and all!
2/16/2011 - Clothing Information
Joe wears 30x30 pants, small or medium shirts, and 8 1/2 men's shoe. If you would like to donate for Destiny, gift cards would be best as it is difficult to know what size she will be once she is recovered. Logan needs newborn clothes, onesies, similac formula, blankets, wipes, bottles, pacifiers, and other baby needs. They have a bassinet, pack n play, and swing so they do NOT need these items.
If you have a donation and need it picked up, Amber Grant is willing to collect them and take them where they need to go. You can contact her at 419-796-9005. She is also collecting clean sheets to cover the donated items until they are needed.

2/15/2011 - From Joe:
"I've gotta get better. I've gotta get better for my baby. He needs me." That's what Destiny kept saying during her therapy for her hand, which was extremely painful for her. She has her priorities straight, for sure.
2/15/2011 - Updates:
Destiny's procedure was successful. Please continue to pray for her as she had to get scrubbed down and was very nervous. Also, an update on Denise...the doctor has decided that she will most likely be in the hospital for at least 2 more weeks, instead of 5-7 days as previously thought. On a good note, Denise was able to walk out to the waiting room and visit her guests. Praise the Lord that she is able to be up and around!
2/15/2011 - Precaution
Destiny is having a blood clot filter inserted into her leg. This is a precautionary measure.
2/15/2011 - From Julie Prowant, Destiny's mom:
On a good note, Joe was able to feed Destiny for the first time this morning. She was eating jello, broth, and juice. They will bring baby Logan to see her in a few minutes. Logan may have a small spot on his chest so he is on antibiotics (this is only a precaution). He will remain in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for at least 5 days. At this time, the only visitors permitted for Logan are parents and grandparents.
2/15/2011 - Checks
Some people have expressed an interest in sending checks instead of donating online. Please send checks payable to Jeff Nicholson(to help with Denise's expenses) or Joseph Nicholson to:
23615 Road I-18
Continental, OH 45831
Thank you!
2/15/2011 - From Carol Hahn, sister-in-law to Denise and aunt to Joe and Destiny
The plastic surgeon came in and said he is especially concerned about Destiny's nose and the cartilage underneath, her arms and legs, both Denise's and Destiny's hands, and both of their fingertips. All of these will have to watched carefully. Both of them will need grafting.
At this point, baby Logan is doing well. Jeff and Joe were able to get good rest last night in the "Home Away from Home" rooms. An immediate need is meal planning for 6-8 people at the "Home Away from Home". If you are interested in taking part in this, please contact Carol Hahn at: carolhahncm at sbcglobal.net. Carol and Debra Nicholson are heading this up. They will let you know what times and dates are available. Thank you!
2/15/2011 - Visitation
The doctors are enforcing visitation times and procedures for Destiny, at this time. The family appreciates all the prayers, thoughts, kind gestures, and visits. Please continue to keep the family in prayer as they process all that is going on with the recovery process.
2/14/2011 - Progress
Courtesy of Kathy Heisinger, sister-in-law to Denise and aunt to Joe and Destiny:
Denise was able to get up and walk a little and sit in a chair. Destiny was able to hold her precious baby Logan on her chest. (*tears here....thank you, Jesus!) The family was able to see videos of Logan. He is such a cutie with lots of hair and spunk! He made up his mind the oxygen was not for him and kept pulling it out of his nose. The doctors have decided to keep it out! Joe, Jeff (Denise's husband), Julie, and Scott (Destiny's parents) have been given rooms called "home away from home" to sleep in. Pray for continued healing for the ladies, relief from pain, and good sleep for all! Thank you so much!
2/14/2011 - Baby Logan James Nicholson born
Logan James Nicholson was born on February 14, 2011. He weighed 5 lbs. 4 oz. and was 18 1/4 inches long.
